Shirley lived and worked in and around Bar Harbor, on Mount Desert Island (MDI), off the coast of Maine, in the foothills of Acadia National Park... sounds idyllic, right? It was! The park roads and trails were our family’s and friends’ playground! We absolutely treasure the time spent traipsing around through Rockefeller's Carriage Roads, with fishing poles, and Jack the best dog ever - so many miles, so many memories. 💕
1. Acadia. Obviously when visiting MDI you should see as much of Acadia National Park as you can! Watch the sun rise from atop Cadillac Mountain, visit Thunder Hole before high tide, have tea and popovers at Jordan Pond House, drive the whole Park Loop Road, and more.… Please respect the Island, leave no trace, no trash, no carving, take no rocks, make no rock stacks, and be kind!
2. Family Favorites. Beyond the park, in the little towns and villages, Shirley’s very most favorite was Willis’ Rock Shop in Bar Harbor, full of beautiful rocks, fossils and other Earthly specimens. Steph’s favorites are finding true north at Charlotte’s Seawall Motel, and amazingly good lobster rolls at Charlotte’s Legendary Lobster Pound. Dianne makes it a tradition with Diver Ed aboard the Starfish Enterprise, a most entertaining and memorable experience!
3. Local Favorites. Other MDI year-round-resident-owned and local favorites include Side Street Cafe, Cottage Street Pub, McKays Public House, the Dog & Pony Tavern, the Black Friar Inn & Pub, Bar Harbor Beer Works, Finback Alehouse, and Leary’s Landing Irish Pub in Bar Harbor, and the Upper Deck Restaurant & Bar on "the back side" of the island in Southwest Harbor, and more...
4. Criterion. You can’t miss our beloved and beautiful Art Deco 1932 Criterion Theatre, Bar Harbor's historic non-profit community performing arts and movie house.
5. Service. Got property on/near the Island? Trenton's Acadia Fuel, and TCL Landscaping +plowing, seeking others...
6. CFC. At federal campaign-time, please consider MDI nonprofits. The Bar Harbor Food Pantry (CFC#) nourishes our community, the YWCA (CFC#) empowers women and girls, Island Connections (CFC#) provides rides for seniors and folks with disabilities, and the Island Housing Trust (CFC#) advances permanent affordable year-round island workforce housing.
7. Local Legend. And just so that you may share in the knowledge of some of our backstory, there are several honorable mentions, legendary establishments we’ve loved and lost over the years… we had the "Best Pizza North of Flatbush" at townie favorite Ryan’s Pizza, there was a great ferry/booze-cruise to/from Nova Scotia aboard the Bluenose, kids hung-out at Epi’s game room but I was there for the Triad, A-listers often performed at Geddy’s, who are/were celebrity Islanders? what else?
Last Updated February 2024 with Love for the Island from Shirley’s family in her/our native Virginia! 💕👵🏻
